How to play Tents & Trees

Find a campsite for every tree. The trees are fixed; you decide where the tents go. The numbers around the grid tell you how many tents each row and column needs.

Build a complete campsite

  1. Pair each tree with one tent. Its tent must sit directly above, below, left, or right of it. A diagonal tent does not count.
  2. Give every tent its own tree. One tree cannot supply two tents. A tent may be beside more than one tree, provided every tree and tent can be paired one to one.
  3. Leave space between tents. Two tents may not touch along an edge or at a corner.
  4. Match the outside numbers. A row marked 2 needs exactly two tents; a column marked 0 needs none.
Solved three by three Tents and Trees exampleTents occupy the four corners. Trees occupy the middle square of each edge. Row and column counts are two, zero, two. Each tent can be assigned its own adjacent tree even though it touches two trees.202202
Four tents, four trees.
The tents do not touch. Dashed lines show one valid pairing. A different pairing of these same tents is fine: the puzzle is about finding tent positions, not one specific set of pairing lines.

A useful place to start

A zero outside the grid rules out a whole row or column. You can mark those empty squares as grass. Squares with no tree directly beside them also cannot hold a tent.

Next, look for a tree with only one available neighbor. After placing its tent, the eight surrounding squares cannot hold another tent. Keep checking the row and column counts as the campsite fills.

A green count means that row or column has enough tents. It does not guarantee those tents are in the right places. The completed board must satisfy every rule together.

Keyboard controls

Tab into the map and move with the arrow keys. Enter or Space uses the selected tool. Press T for tents, G for grass, or E for the eraser. Delete clears the focused square; Escape dismisses a hint. The row and column counts are included in each square’s accessible label.

About these puzzles

Tentgrove has 36 original layouts: 12 each at 4 × 4, 6 × 6, and 8 × 8. Each layout has one set of tent positions. Different valid tree pairings of that same layout are accepted.

Each size has a daily puzzle that changes at 00:00 UTC. Daily boards repeat every 12 days per size. Your saved daily stays open across midnight and reopening; Play today asks before opening the new date. Earlier dated records are kept.
